Sanjay Balraj Dutt (born 29 July 1959) is an Indian actor who primarily works in Hindi cinema. As one of the most well-known Hindi film actors since the 1980s, Dutt has amassed numerous awards and appeared in more than 100 films over the course of a career covering more than four decades. His roles have ranged from romance to comedy, but have typically been in action genres.

He belongs to the  Dutt family; his parents are the stars  Sunil Dutt and  Nargis. With Rocky, Dutt made his acting début.(1981). With the exception of the criminal thriller Naam (1986), a turning point in his career, a downturn in his career ensued. With movies like Saajan (1991), Sadak (1991), Khalnayak (1993), Aatish (1994), Andolan (1995), Daag (1999), Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999), Vaastav: The Reality (1999), and Mission Kashmir (1999), he subsequently established himself as a prolific star.(2000). He received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 1999 for his widely praised work in Vaastav.

Dutt was born 29 July 1959 in BombayBombay State, India (now MumbaiMaharashtra) to renowned Hindi film actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis Dutt.  Dutt’s lineage can be traced to the Rawalpindi Region of West Punjab; he was born to a Punjabi Hindu Mohyal Brahmin father and a Muslim mother of Punjabi ethnicity. Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt are Sanjay’s sisters. Sanjay’s name was selected through a crowdsourcing process using the Urdu film magazine Shama. His mother’s passing in 1981, just before the release of his first movie, is credited with sparking his drug habit. Early on, Dutt made his acting debut in his father’s movie Reshma Aur Shera as a Qawali singer (1971).

Career


Early career and breakthrough (1981–1988)

In 1981, Dutt made his Bollywood film debut in the hugely successful Rocky. In 1982’s highest-grossing Hindi film Vidhaata, which also included seasoned actors Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, and Sanjeev Kumar, Dutt played the lead role. He appeared in films such as Main Awara Hoon (1983). He shot Jaan Ki Baazi in 1985, his first movie in two years.

In Dutt’s career, the 1986 movie Naam marked a turning point because it was a huge box office and critical hit. Throughout the 1980s, Dutt starred in a number of popular movies including Imaandaar, Inaam Dus Hazaar, Jeete Hain Shaan Se, Mardon Wali Baat, Ilaaka, Hum Bhi Insaan Hain, Kanoon Apna Apna, and Taaqatwar.

Rise to stardom (1989–1993)

His performances in the films Kabzaa (1988) and J. P. Dutta’s Hathyar (1989) earned positive reviews from critics, but neither movie did particularly well financially. With movies like Tejaa, Khatarnaak, Zahreelay, Thanedaar, Khoon Ka Karz, Yalgaar, Gumrah, Sahibaan, and Aatish: Feel the Fire, he continued to have popularity in the 1990s. Thereafter, he starred in some of the most influential Indian movies of the early 1990s, including Sadak, Sajan (for which he received a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actor), and Khalnayak, for which he received a second nomination for Best Actor.

Arrest due to involvement in 1993 serial bombings, films after arrest (1993–1999)

His performances in the films Kabzaa (1988) and J. P. Dutta’s Hathyar (1989) earned positive reviews from critics, but neither movie did particularly well financially. In the decade of 1980, Sanjay started counting with big actors like Govinda, Mithun, Dharmendra.

Comeback (1999–2003)

The fact that all five of Dutt’s releases from that year were among the highest-grossing movies of the year indicates that 1999 was a great year for him and is remembered as his return. Kartoos, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Daag: The Fire, and Vaastav: The Reality, for which he received numerous accolades, including his first Filmfare Award for Best Actor, marked the beginning of his career. He received praise from the critics as well as several nominations and accolades for his work in the 2000 film Mission Kashmir. Because to Dutt’s performance in the movie, the President of India also extended an invitation to him to visit Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Dutt dated Tina Munim, his co-star from his debut movie, in the early 1980s. Following the breakup of this union, Dutt wed the actress Richa Sharma in 1987. In 1996, a brain tumour claimed her life. Trishala Dutt, the couple’s 1988-born daughter, resides in the United States with her paternal grandparents.

On February 14, 1998, Dutt married model-turned-air hostess Rhea Pillai in his second marriage. 2008 saw the divorce’s completion. Sanjay married Manyata Dutt after a continuous relationship for 2 years. He gave birth to boy and girl twins on October 21, 2010.

In August 2020, Dutt received a stage 3 lung cancer diagnosis. He received treatment in Mumbai and is now lung cancer-free.
