Shubman Gill
Shubman Gill (born 8 September 1999) is an Indian cricketer who plays for Punjab in domestic cricket as a right-handed opening batsman. He is a Gujarat Titans player in the Indian Premier League. Notably, Gill was the vice-captain of the Indian Under-19 cricket team at the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament. Gill is regarded as one of the world’s most talented young cricketers. He is also the youngest batsman to ever hit a double century in One Day International cricket. He also holds the record for the best individual score for the Indian men’s T20I team.In 2017, he made his List-A debut against Vidharbha and his first-class debut for Punjab against Bengal in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy, scoring a half-century and 129 runs in the LAST match against Services.
In January 2019, he made his international debut for the Indian cricket team. Shubman batted at number three and scored 372 runs at an average of 124.00 in the event, helping India win a record fourth world title. He was named the tournament’s Player of the event. Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly all praised his match-winning 102 not out against archrivals Pakistan U-19.
Early life
Shubman Gill was born on 8 September, 1999 in into a Sikh family in Fazilka, Punjab where they owned agricultural lands. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, an agriculturist, desired to be a cricketer as well but was unable to realise his ambitions. Instead, he resolved to develop Gill as a cricketer. He noticed his son’s cricketing aptitude at a young age and embraced the opportunity to improve his son’s cricketing abilities. He’d have the farm’s hired staff throw balls at Shubman to help him practise hitting. Gill’s father, certain of his son’s skill, relocated to Mohali and rented a house near the PCA Stadium.
Shubman has been a cricket fan since he was three years old, according to his father. “He had only played cricket since he was three years old.” He never asked for such things. It was just bat and ball for him. “He used to sleep with a bat and ball,” claimed Gill’s father, Lakhwinder Singh. Gill scored an undefeated double-century in his Under-16 state debut for Punjab in the Vijay Merchant Trophy. In 2014, he hit 351 runs in Punjab’s Inter-District Under-16 competition and shared a record opening partnership of 587 runs with Nirmal Singh.

Personal life
Gill’s father, Lakhwinder Singh, is a farmer, and his grandpa is Didar Singh Gill. He was born into a Sikh Jat family in Chak Khere wala (also reported as Chak Jaimal Singh Wala) hamlet, near Jalalabad Tehsil in the Fazilka district region of Punjab. Shahneel Gill is Shubman Gill’s sister. His father, Lakhwinder, built a cricket ground in his farm for Gill to practise on and a turf pitch to play on. He used to challenge neighbourhood lads to remove his lad’s wicket and reward them 100 rupees if they were successful. According to Lakhwinder Singh, he abandoned farming in his village and relocated to Mohali in order to raise his son to the level of a professional cricketer.
Gill took instruction from his school for several years after his father admitted him to the Punjab Cricket Association’s academy. Gill lived in his village for a number of years. Gill’s father aspired to be a pro cricketer. Shubman Gill has strong emotional ties to his village and farm.
Domestic career
On February 25, 2017, he made his List A debut for Punjab against Vidharbha in the 2016–17 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He made his first-class debut for Punjab in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy on November 17, 2017. Later that month, against Services, he batted for Punjab and got his first first-class century. He finished with 129 points against the Bengals.. In the 2018 Indian Premier League, he made his Twenty20 debut for Kolkata Knight Riders on 14 April 2018. In October 2018, he was called up to India C’s team for the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy. He hit an unbeaten century in the final round-robin match to help India C reach the final.
Gill recorded his first first-class double century against Tamil Nadu in December 2018. Punjab finished the run chase at 324/8 in 57 overs, tying the game. Gill had 990 first-class runs from fourteen innings over eight matches as of January 1, 2019. He was Punjab’s highest run-scorer in 2018-19, with 728 runs in five Ranji Trophy matches. He was named one of eight players to watch ahead of the 2019 Indian Premier League, which begins in March 2019.He was selected India Blue captain for the 2019-20 Duleep Trophy in August 2019.
Gill was appointed captain of India C for the 2019-20 Deodhar Trophy in October 2019. In November 2019, he made history as the tournament’s youngest captain. He smashed Virat Kohli’s previous record of 21 years and 124 days established during the 2009-10 tournament at the age of 20 years and 57 days. Gill joined the newly founded Gujarat Titans for Rs. 8 crore (US$1.0 million) before the 2022 IPL auction. Glamorgan recruited Gill as an overseas player for the remainder of the 2022 County Championship season in September 2022.
International career
He was a member of the Indian U-19 team in February 2017, where he was vital in the team’s series triumph over England U-19. In December 2017, he was named India’s vice captain for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. The International Cricket Council (ICC) named Gill the squad’s rising star following India’s tournament matches.Gill was included to India’s limited-overs squad for the January 2019 series against New Zealand. In August 2019, Gill became the youngest Indian batsman to score a double century in a first-class match.
Gill was named captain of India A for their December 2019 trip of New Zealand. He was included to India’s Test squad for the series against New Zealand in February 2020.On December 26, 2020, Gill made his Test debut for India against Australia, aiding India to a comeback win in the series’ second match. His contributions were critical.Gill reached a big milestone in his cricket career on August 22, 2022, when he scored his maiden One Day International (ODI) century for the Indian national side.
Gill got his first Test century against Bangladesh on December 16, 2022, and was removed for 110 runs. Shubman made his Twenty20 International debut on January 3, 2023, against Sri Lanka. In the game, he made seven runs off five balls. Gill hit a double century against New Zealand on January 18, 2023. He became the fifth Indian batsman to score a double century in ODIs. Gill recorded his first T20I century against New Zealand on February 1, 2023. He became the fifth Indian batsman to score a century across all international formats. He now owns the record for the highest individual score by an Indian in a men’s T20I, with 126 off 63 balls.
