Tara Sutaria
Tara Sutaria (born 19 November 1995) is an Indian actress who works in Hindi films. She began her career as a singer in Disney India‘s Big Bada Boom before transitioning to acting in the channel’s sitcoms The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir (2012) and Oye Jassie (2013). Sutaria made her cinematic debut in 2019 with Student of the Year 2, for which she received the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut. Since then, she has played the lead in the romance dramas Marjaavaan (2019), Tadap (2021), Heropanti 2 (2022), and Ek Villain Returns (2022).
Early life and education
Tara Sutaria was born on 19 November 1995 into a Parsi Zoroastrian family in Mumbai. Pia, her twin sister. Both received classical ballet, modern dance, and Latin American dance training at the Royal Academy of Dance‘s School of Classical Ballet and Western Dance and the Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing in the United Kingdom. She has been a professional singer since she was seven years old, and she has performed in operas and competitions throughout her career. St. Andrew’s College of Arts, Science and Commerce awarded her a bachelor’s degree in Mass Media.

Career
Television career (2010–2013)
Sutaria began her affiliation with Disney Channel India as a video jockey and continues to work with them, producing two popular sitcoms. She has also recorded music for films, ads, and her own creative work in India and overseas. Her song “Slippin’ Through My Fingers” appears on Bharat Dhabholkar’s Blame It On Yashraj, produced by Ashwin Gidwani. Sutaria has also played Sandy in Raell Padamsee’s version of the musical Grease. She has recorded and performed solo concerts in London, Tokyo, Lavasa, and Mumbai, among other places. She has worked with Louiz Banks, Mikey McCleary, and has been a soloist for the Stop-Gaps Choral Ensemble for over a decade.
Tara was one of the top seven contestants in the “Pogo Amazing Kids Awards” singer category in 2008. She was nominated for her performances as Vinnie in The Suite Life of Karan & Kabir and Jassie in Oye Jassie.
Film career (2019–present)
Sutaria was one of two actresses chosen for the role of Princess Jasmine in the 2019 American fantasy film Aladdin, but lost out to Naomi Scott. Later that year, she made her cinematic debut alongside Tiger Shroff and Ananya Panday in Punit Malhotra’s coming-of-age teen drama Student of the Year 2. Produced by Karan Johar, it acted as a standalone sequel to Student of the Year (2012).Shubhra Gupta commented in The Indian Express, “Tara Sutaria is perfectly put together and yet appears assembly-line produced.” She was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Later that year, Sutaria co-starred in Milap Zaveri’s action thriller Marjaavaan as Zoya, a mute music teacher, with Sidharth Malhotra, Riteish Deshmukh, and Rakul Preet Singh. The film was somewhat successful, grossing 65.35 crores worldwide. Namrata Joshi commented in The Hindu that the film was “loud, overcooked, and overdone,” and that Sutaria was confined to “smiling and weeping alternately.” Sutaria and debutante Ahan Shetty featured in Milan Luthria’s romantic thriller Tadap, an adaptation of Telugu film RX 100 (2018), in 2021. Critics had conflicting feelings about it. “Tadap unabashedly plays to the gallery with action, music, and well-shot visuals,” commented Rachana Dubey of the Times of India, praising the performances of Shetty, Sutaria, and Shukla.”
She joined with Shroff again in Ahmed Khan’s actioner Heropanti 2 in 2022, which earned bad reviews from critics and was a commercial flop. In July 2022, she co-starred with Arjun Kapoor as Aarvi Malhotra in Mohit Suri’s psychological suspense action thriller film Ek Villain Returns, alongside John Abraham and Disha Patani. Critics gave the movie mixed reviews. According to Sukanya Verma of Rediff.com, “Tara Sutaria is exactly how she was in her previous film.” Sutaria will next star in the thriller Apurva.
