Uorfi Javed (born 15 October 1997; formerly Urfi Javed), is an Indian television actress and internet personality. Javed, known for her distinct fashion sense and social media presence, began her career in soap operas and rose to prominence in 2021 after starring on Voot‘s reality show Bigg Boss OTT..

Personal life

Javed was born on October 15, 1997, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, to a Muslim family. She attended City Montessori School in Lucknow for her education. She received her bachelor’s degree in public communication from Amity University in Lucknow. Javed is the daughter of Ifru Javed and Zakiya Sultana, and she has three sisters, Urusa, Asfi, and Dolly Javed, as well as a brother, Sameer Aslam. Her father verbally and physically abused her mother and siblings during her youth. In 2017, Javed began dating her Meri Durga co-star Paras Kalnawat. The pair divorced in 2018. Javed, although growing up in a strict Muslim home, has claimed that “I don’t believe in Islam and I don’t follow any religion.”

Javed declared in 2021 that she would not marry a Muslim man and that she was reading the Bhagavad Gita. In the midst of a controversy over renaming her hometown of Lucknow in 2023, Javed wrote, “I want to stay in a democratic rashtra! There is no Hindu or Muslim rashtra. In 2022, she announced her new name as Uorfi on social media and requested that she be addressed as such. Despite being pronounced the same, the spelling was changed on the advise of a numerologist.

Career

Javed played Avni Pant in Sony TV‘s Bade Bhaiyya Ki Dulhania in 2016. She portrayed Chhaya in Star Plus’s Chandra Nandini from 2016 to 2017. She later played Aarti in Star Plus‘s Meri Durga. Javed starred as Kamini Joshi in SAB TV‘s Saat Phero Ki Hera Pherie, Bella Kapoor in Colors TV‘s Bepannaah, Piyali in Star Bharat’s Jiji Maa, and Nandini in &TV‘s Daayan in 2018. Shivani Bhatia joined Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai in 2020. Later, she portrayed Tanisha Chakraborty in Kasautii Zindagii Kay. In 2021, she competed in Voot’s reality show Bigg Boss OTT, finishing in 13th place. According to Vice, Javed “shot to fame in India” after appearing on Bigg Boss OTT, where she gained popularity for her distinct design style.

She appeared in a music video with Indo-Canadian musician Kunwarr in 2022. She appeared as a guest competitor and mischief maker on MTV India’s reality show MTV Splitsvilla X4 in December 2022. Various media agencies stated in 2023 that Urfi was imprisoned in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for filming while wearing provocative apparel in a public area, which is against the law in the UAE. However, Javed explained that the cops had arrived on the shoot due to a logistical difficulty, not because of her choice of clothes. The shoot resumed the next day.

Public image

Javed first garnered public attention for her design sense when competing on  Bigg Boss OTT, where she wore a garbage bag dress. Javed has created and worn a number of items described as ‘bizarre dresses’ by Lifestyle Asia, such as dresses constructed of timepieces, yellow flowers, chains, and pins. Urfi achieved the distinction of being one of the most searched Asians on Google in December 2022, surpassing Bollywood celebs like as Janhvi Kapoor and Disha Patani. Javed has nearly four million Instagram followers as of January 2023.

Chitra Wagh, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP, accused Javed of “indulging in nudity publicly on the streets of Mumbai” in a tweet. Following Wagh’s complaint, the Mumbai Police summoned Javed for questioning at an Amboli police station. Javed filed a complaint against Wagh, claiming that the lawmaker was “threatening and criminally intimidating the actor in the public domain.”
